Oracle IFS has been doing this for five years already
Oracle IFS has been doing this since Oracle version 8. It was called Internet File System (IFS) when it first came out (now it is called Oracle Files based on the Oracle Content Management SDK). This is when Microsoft noticed and, as usual, decided to copy the idea. Even the name --IFS vs. WinFS-- has been copied.
It would be nice if the article mentioned that there already are non-Microsoft products that do what WinFS will do in two or three more years...
