I don't think the Anti-Trust law suit had a thing to do with Linux as an alternative. Linux came about in a manner that made it all but impossible for Microsoft to kill. In fact even today Microsoft has serious trouble competing with Linux in the server arena. It's forcing Microsoft to try to compete in a manner in which it doesn't have dominance. They are doing well at in my opinion though.
