Microsoft back in the days of DOS didn't have the monopoly at all.

First off it was the IBM PC vs the APPLE. Late it IBMs were cloned as was the OS. You had many version of DOS from many sources. It was Hell for a time with version conflicts and trying to find out what DOS version worked with what software. No monopoly there. Even when Windows 95 came out there was no monopoly because you could run other 32 bit OSes and many people did.

I think it may have been somewhere about 1998 that they got monopoly status but that's just my guess. Who really knows what a monopoly is? I'd be curious to know.
