- I think it is likely that it will be dropped ...
- Support is waning and more and more people in Europe are considering the ramifications. Europe has gotten along just fine for decades without software patents, and it is unlikely that lack of software patents would hinder their future progress. That leaves the US and Japan as basically the only countries in the world with software patents. And both the US and Japan are remarkable only in the fact that both are offshoring both technology and expertise as quickly as they can. Not a great indicator of long term success. I suspect that eventually the WTO will force the US and Japan to back off on software patents as much of the rest of the world opposes them. Unless of course the US and Japan are able to dictate their own terms to the WTO in which case the WTO will probably become irrelevant.
