Scaling
This is the "horizontal" scaling vs "vertical" scaling argument. As Google has found out, horizontal scaling of cheap PCs means a lot of machines - all of which eat power. A 64 CPU server might cost $2 million, and 64 dual-processor "server-level" PCs would cost $320,000 (@$5000 ea.) - but that server takes about 200 bucks a month in electricity and cooling and real estate - while those 64 servers would take maybe 10 times that. This adds up quick!

Horizontally scaled machines are poor at jobs that require lots of communication between running processes - since the network lag is much worse than traveling over the backplane.

So Mr. Dell doesn't grasp the fact that there is room for BOTH in the computer landscape. Good thing he has "stuck" to just one thing - and not tried to do others . . .
