I've been using Thunderbird since v0.7 and really like it. I tried Outlook 2003 for a while (MS sent us a few free copies of Office 2003) but it comes with too much baggage - like most of Office.

Between its default blocking of most non MS Office attachments and the features you lose making it safe (running IE at high securtiy, no cookies, no images, etc.) what's left didn't impress me much.

Thunderbirds junk mail filters and rules are as good, IMO, as O2003 and it's not the resource hog that Outlook is. And we prefer to block attachments at the server which is much easier than dealing with them at the client level.

It's a great first effort and I expect it to improve.
