I think the article's appropriate in light of the stories we've been getting recently concerning iTunes and other commercial online music ventures.

Most people miss the signifance of the CNET venture: it allows recording artists to totally bypass the System that keeps most of them unheard and CD prices over $10 a pop. If this type of service really goes great guns (and so far it hasn't) it could completely turn the recording industry upside down.

I've got two friends/acquaintances who are/were selling music over the old MP3.com service, bypassing the usual route that artists must take to get an audience for recorded materials.
