There are a lot of other ways to achieve this
I run localband.net and have thousands of bands on the system that have links to their music on my site. I avoid the bandwidth and storage costs by having them LINK to their songs which they store on the space provided by their ISP. Getting big companies involved in small business will never work. Also, cdbaby.com has managed to do a great job of keeping the indie music going.
