It's not really protectionism

I wouldn't call this protectionist but common sense. If it can be done the same locally for the same price then that just makes sense.

What is protectionist is apply tarrifs to foriegn market items in order boost profits in the US.

For example the IRON tarifs with Japan. Then there is wheat and Lumber with Canada. Another is the Mad Cow crisis, it's the stupidist one. American Cattle ranchers are enjoying the highest prices in Cattle in years. They want to keep the prices high so they keep Cattle from Canada out. But at the same time they need Canadian beef so they let cattle processed in Canada that are under 30 months of age to be shipped to the US. Now companies like IBP will look to opening or expanding processing plants in Canada as the cost of possible US jobs. While here in Canada they will find a shortage of workers so they import Mexican workers. All that so the ranchers can keep getting rich off high prices while everyone else suffers and jobs go North and meat prices stay high in stores.

And what is protectionism supposed to do? Seems protectionism only help a very small sliver of the population.

Softwood lumber is similar too. Putting contstruction workers out of business while Lumber mill owners reap the rewards of overprices softwood. So who suffers? Construction workers and families looking to buy a home. They out number a few lumber companies.
