I'd put my money on Linux
With embedded Linux no Microsoft Licensing fee. That means more money for the company.

The Big Car companies have the cash for development teams so developing Linux is no problem.

As for the consumer, why would they care? They buy cars. It's not like they care what computer system is running thier engine. Does anyone right now know what computer system is running thier current cars engine? I haven't a clue, I just know I have to take my Mustang to FORD sometime so my car can talk to thier computer.
