There IS a difference. Patents were designed to protect someone from copying your design for a left-handed back scratcher and selling an exact copy as their own product. Copyrights are for the descriptive slogans and language you use to sell that back scratcher.

Patents should only be used to protect tangible working models (ie: hardware, TVs, cars, safety matches, etc.).

Copyrights should only be used to protect an intangible notion (ie: ideas, written works, music, etc.).
