Whay should we be forced to spend money . . .
just to show that patents that shouldn't have been approved aren't supportable.

The patent system is a mess and being used against the spirit of the laws. I'm not a lawyer, but I have done quite a bit of research into patent law and as far as I'm concerned they are greatly pushing the gray areas of law by even having these types of patents valid at all.

Patenting ideas that don't even explain the technicalities of accomplishing a method/idea is not acceptable. Patents are to be used for processes and methods that are specific, not general. Example: A guy patents the idea of having a small device that plays music. He has no clue how to do it, but yet he is awarded a patent. After years of legal battles, Sony finally gives him a settlement, not because he's right, but they want to get rid of the legal hassles (which can cost more than the settlement). This is outrageous. The idea now is to go out and patent every idea that you can think of, even if it's nowhere near being possible right now. If technology ever comes to the point that it becomes possible you're rich. However, it costs money to patent things. Thus, who is doing this? Microsoft, IBM, etc. No room for the little guy to innovate and no reason to take the risk. In the end, innovation dies out. This is in direct opposition to why the patent laws were developed.
