It's the lawyers
Tech companies are generally sticking to the MAD principle.
Now we have patent holding companies fishing for money.
They've been hitting the little guys over the years but MS, IBM and anybody else with some cash (sorry RedHat :-)) make great targets.
Isn't somebody trying to enforce a JPEG patent?

It'll get worse before it gets better.
They'll tighten up qualification but it won't really change anything.
Software patents are just wrong.
