What I hate most about so called "exerpts" is that they spout what they believe to be true ..not what actually is. I myself just recently downloaded a copy of Gentoo Linux ...I did not pay a dime ...I installed it and low and behold I was able to get updates for free. Now while its not the easiest distribution to install I fail to see how your argument holds true to any except the commercial linux distributions. And in those cases you are not just getting an operating system (like MS will seel you for 200) you are getting an os and entire application suite. For 80 dollars I can purchase SUSE linux and get the OS, Open Office, Mozilla, Evolution and loads of other applications for free...and if/when I do have a problem with any of those applications that shipped with the distribution I can(i paid for support) get help with those applicaitons. If Linux is not for you fine, spend your money and take what you get. If you are a large business and you can not risk not havving support, fine buy a enterprise commercial distribution and pay your support fees. But if your just the average home hobbyist you have a multitude of distributions to choose from and many different ways to get updates to those distributions that do not require and out of pocket expense short of an internet connection.
