Have you ever used Linux?
Sounds like you haven't.

I've applied updates manually. I do it for Windows, Unix, and Linux. I've yet to have to recompile an update.

Windows Update SUCKS!!!! After having updates apply that way that screwed my system up(direct X 8.0 anyone). I refuse to use it. Better to download the file maually and install it. At least you get the details on the patch.

For example: Apply patch Q1111111 it will break patch Q222222 so you must reapply patch Q222222. Windows update neglects mentioning that but if you download and save the patch you can view the readme file informing you.
