Great Expectations for Linux
No, Linux is NOT all that I want it to be, but it is a lot more than Windows in any of it's incarnations.

I don't know whether Linux will ever be the average user's destop system of choice, but it has been my primary desktop system for five years now. Lots of reasons: it is faster and more reliable by an order of magnitude than Windows, I appreciate having my own web server and ftp server on my desktop to QC my work before I put it up on public sites, I feel BUNCHES more secure when working on the Internet (ever notice how all those worms and trojans hit MS systems?) since I have full control of all security settings, and it simplifies networking on any level of scale.

Yeah, I agree that the installation programs suck. Every time I upgrade I backup my configuration files first so that I can restore what the installation gods see fit to change. That's the main reason I don't like MS -- Bill G. doesn't know more than I do about how I want to run my system, and neither does RedHat. But anything I don't like about a new install I can just change after I boot up. If you don't know how to do this, and don't want to learn how, then I agree that Linux is not for you.

My only regret is that I am forced to maintain a dual-boot system with Windows as my alternate so that I can keep application compatibility with the majority of the business world. And that's only because I am a cheapskate/idealist that doesn't want to pay for commercial applications to run on an open source OS!

Believe me, Linux is going to take over even greater market share than it has already in network server systems, and will continue to "penetreate the desktop" for professionals. And if better installation programs are all that is needed to win the war, they will be forthcoming.

By the way, multimedia works fine on my Linux system.
