Free labor is an American tradition ...
From barn raisings to volunteer fire departments, free labor is steeped in American tradition. And there has never been any indication that this is causing a huge displacement in the workforce. I am absolutely amazed that someone would have hostility toward people doing what they enjoy doing as a hobby and attempting to contribute to the well being of society at the same time. I would be far more concerned about the mass exporting of jobs currently under way. That is killing more than just tech jobs at a far faster rate than the effect of free software. Right here in my own town, our local hospital is putting in a system (enabled by current technology) to fire all of their radiologists and employ off shore radiologists working via a computer link up. They will pay them a fraction of the price, they won't have to worry about liability (if something bad happens, the patient can sue in an Indian or Chinese court, rots u ruck), they won't have to worry about schedualing, they won't have to worry about a lot of things. What other jobs are at risk? More every day. And if free software is a better way to get the job done, we are shooting ourselves in the foot by fighting it. It will just mean that even more jobs will go overseas where people see the handwriting on the wall. The US right now is extremely unable to compete with the rest of the world. That is why jobs are going overseas in droves. And trying to fight free software will only make the situation worse.
