IT: too easy for comfort.

Okay, so by "producers" you meant software providers. You are correct, that the establishment of a standard, Windows, led to an "explosion of applications" because Windows made programming a good deal easier and the developers would be able to sell widely without porting and porting and porting. The network effect works.

But that wasn't my subject.

The original post spoke about tools and other ways to make programming easier.

Forget the general market for applications, please.
What does that greater ease of programming do to in-house programming? Makes it faster and easier. When that's true, fewer people are needed. This is not good news for employment.

But so long as the progress has come about through paid work by software providers, these disruptions in peoples' lives have to be accepted. My problem would occur if these tools were developed free, as an attack on jobs and salaries. (Whatever the attitude of the programmer, free work that reduces salaries and the number of jobs is an attack on employment.)

Why, if things get easy enough, one person can write and adjust the needed in-house applications, even while doing all the minor maintenance work needed. Wouldn't that be great.
