I'll give it a try
Not sure how successful I'll be. When I first broke into the field, programmers were looking askance at compilers. If an application could be put up in a fraction of the time, then only a fraction of programmers would retain their jobs. Even more horrific, COBOL let non-programmers create programs. The end of the line for a fledgling profession.

But what actually happened? Lower cost led to an explosion of applications. Automation reaches areas undreamt and that would not have been attempted without the advance in productivity that higher level languages afforded. The game was not zero-sum.

The open source model? I'm not sure exactly what that is, but almost daily we find examples of collaboration like today's VA announcement.

I've never had direct dealings with VA (except their paying for my M.S. and initial home financing), but it seems they've found a model that works. This kind announcement from academia, national labs, NASA, NOAA is near-daily fare. Whatever is wrong with the model eludes me, and apparently a bunch of smart, dedicated people.
