Zero sum assumption

The notion that the sky is falling has long been with us. A 1970 issue of Datamation predicted that "programmers as we know them" would vanish by 1980. From where I sit, Datamation has disappeared, but programmers have not.

Earlier the fear was that computers would bring massive displacement to the workforce - "you can be replaced by a button" (this was the same time frame in which the worldwide market for computers was predicted a five). But it hasn't happened yet. Thus far, the net result of increased productivity has not been diminishment of the producers, but expansion of that segment of the economy.

Volunteer labor? Not a factor, but tilt away!
