On the threshold of a new era ...
Just as the unskilled person today can easily generate an impressive web page with tools like Dreamweaver. The programmer of the future will generate highly advanced and specialized applications easily with modular free software components using a highly automated gui driven process. A few years back, a whole industry revolved around publishing low volume products. The advent of desktop publishing all but wiped it out. Powerful new desktop architectures, free software components, and amazing new tools will bring the same type of revolution to the software industry. Traditional software companies will have to reinvent themselves to survive. Those that attempt to fight the future instead will perish.
