Control of the solution Vs Ownership by vendors

If your organization builds upon cross vendor standard interfaces and open source software your organization has full control of the IT solution.

If your organization builds upon single vendor proprietary interfaces and closed source software then your organization's IT solution is effectively owned by the vendor.


1) Choose vendors that support open unencumbered cross vendor interfaces.

2) Build your IT solution using the standard cross vendor interfaces plus portable open source licensed software. Use encumbered proprietary interfaces sparingly, if possible though open proxy methords that could also be implemented using open source.

3) By all means use proprietary software development tools, IDEs, databases and management interfaces, but only to generate code that meets critera #2.
