Replacing XP with an older OS?...
Pardon me for saying so but that is not a very wise thing to do. There are a lot of security issues that are addressed in the later OS's like XP that aren't dealt with in the earlier.

Let's transpose the situation to get away from the Microsoft bashing arena; How do you think others would view it if discarded the latest Linux distro and put an earlier one on with known vulnerabilities?

I wonder... When you machine is hacked and starts acting as a zombie for spammers, will you be blaming Microsoft and slagging them off in forums? And if you do, will you be honest about why it has happened?

As a software developer, I get regular bulletins, training, good advice and all sorts of help from Microsoft to ensure that I'm aware of the issues, all free! That's one hell of an investment on Microsoft's part to ensure that end users like you have computers that are reliable and secure, but what's more important is they tell us (software developers) how to take advantage of the increased security of later versions of operating systems such as XP.

By installing an earlier version of Windows, you are effectively throwing away all this effort that is done on your behalf, and opening yourself up to all the things you complain about.

Consider re-installing XP, or even upgrading to XP Pro. You can configure XP to look like older versions of Windows with a couple of mouse clicks, but you'd have the benefits of the new.

I hope you read this in the good spirit it was written with.
