Bold Move
Kudos to Sun for this move to make their operating system more competitive. Would that Ken Olsen had the same pragmatic understanding of the market back before the demise of DEC. I've worked with Solaris in many situations and like most Unix derivatives it is a solid, reliable platform. Like others in this forum, I am concerned about Sun's commitment to x86, but with the superb x86 processors currently available, particularly those from AMD, the processor improvements that are already in the pipeline, and price/performance ratios that require large volumes to match, I think Sun realizes the x86 market is where the action will be over the next several years. This version of Solaris will be a worthy competitor in its market space.
