Sun is unreliable and Solaris is a pig
With Sun's on again off again attitude regarding the x86 market I wouldn't trust them farther than I could throw them. Also, having used Solaris x86 in the past I have seen what a pig it really is. Nearly all of the engineers where I was working at the time removed Solaris and replaced it with Linux and noted a large increase in performance. On these 512 meg dual x86 boxes Solaris was constantly hitting the swap file, after switching to Linux I had to run 2 large makes in order to even get Linux to even touch the swap file. Disk I/0 down, performance up.

I like that new Sparc CPU with 8 cores on it, but you need such a CPU to run Solaris decently.
