Not exactly the same game
While it may look like "deja vu all over again," there is one vast difference. The Java guys aren't at the starting line, but are in fact hard at work implementing enterprise solutions. While it may be disappointing and somewhat inefficient to be working without pre-arranged standards, what usually happens is that a de facto standard arises from the dominant players. And usually competition provides better results than committees. We'll just have to wait for the market to provide the solutions.
