...Web servers accross the Internet have been offering the source code for the new Mozilla Firefox browser for anybody to download, inspect and modify. This allows vulnerabilities to be discovered and fixed.

Sources state that the source codes have been available for months before the 1.0 release, "and everynight when we update the code [they] place the new codes on [their] sites also."

The Mozilla organisation claimed that they are not concerned as to who downloads the source codes, "as long as they let us know what bugs they find," said one man. "They always do. We find [these people] helpful to our project."

Not that I condone stealing proprietary code or posting/selling of code not released into the free world, but the concern over finding vulnerabilities is something of which more companies should take advantage.

Novell always encouraged hackers to break their product --although they never supplied code-- so that vulnerabilities could be found and delt with. THis is one of the many beauties of oss and the only model I think is truly secure. Kind of like OpenPGP and the like.
