I don't think the term "viral" applies to the GPL, however, it certainly stops embrace and extend.
The BSD licence specifically didn't exclude this. (on purpose).
I personally think Linux will never be extinguished. If it was, it would have been done when it was a bug. Now, it's a monster, there's a lot of money riding on it, so you can take it for granted there will be a fight.
Even the company I work for has a lot of money riding on it.
No one underestimates Microsoft's potential savagery in attempting to survive. (I don't mean this as an insult by the way, I think they stop at nothing to win).
However, I do think the middle management company loyalty is perhaps too strong. I think their behaviour levels any upstarts in the industry, and that's probably a very bad thing overall. (No one will ever get their business beyond a certain point, because if the market becomes attractive to Microsoft, they wade in and buy the person out, or run them out of business).
