Of course you're right that patents protect...

You were not giving the complete story when you wrote that Microsoft is treating patents only defensively. Yes, they'll use them for exchanges of IP with other companies and as a revenue stream, as the Commentary observes.

But they'll also use patents offensively, not taking others (open source, say) to court, but obtaining control by simple intimidation. They hired the guy from IBM who apparently invented profitable IP intimidation.
That's also a worthwhile goal.
