I thought people had given up on that argument
---won't the fact that it is open source mean it will be totally vulnerable to attack by hackers who will have the code available for study---

That argument has been shown to be false so many times I don't know why I bother.

#1 web server? Apache. OSS.
#1 cracked web server? IIS. closed source.

Been that way for years.

Unless you've had your head in the sand for the past 10 years you know that MS 'security by obsecurity' is a farce.

Its not just having the code. Its the way the software works. MS is a stand-alone, single user system that was never meant to be any more connected than sneaker-net. Security is an add-on after thought. Going to a web site can give total control of your MS box to a cracker. MS method of tying everything to the kernel leaves the kernel wide open to attacks. To secure an MS box requires disabling all the protocols that MS requires to work. You can secure it but then you can't use it.

The systems are totally different. That is the reason security will never be a reality with MS. It is not possible without rewriting everything, which means breaking everything.

Take some time and learn how the *nix* systems work. Then you'll see why it does not matter if anybody can see the code. Look at MS. Its obvious that keeping the code secret does nothing to secure it.
