MS patents/IP and open source...
Many look at this as a way for MS to "fight" open source. I think there may be a lot more to it than that and MS is looking to turn open source into another marketing and delivery channel for their technology and products.

How so you ask. Here's some food for thought. MS will grant a license for their XML schema(s), but it can NOT be open sourced. (See their license.) In fact they are granting a good number of licenses for many of their technologies, but again none of it can be open sourced.

So, that means third party developers (maybe even MS someday) will build add ons to Linux to allow interoperability with Windows systems. Say a dozen or so become popular. That means along with your Linux distro you will BUY say 5 or 6 add ons from MS (or third parties) for a nice fee (maybe as much as Windows itself) and have to authorize/register them via a MS web site, and agree to the included MS EULA.

Either way you do, MS sells more product and it truly does become *Windows Everywhere".
