Linux's largest corporate supporter, IBM, recieves almost as many patents in a single year as Microsoft has in it's entire portfolio (the article says that MS has less than 4,000 patents total; IBM was awarded 3,415 U.S. patents in 2003).

Microsoft's research facility was only started in 1999 and has less than 700 employees. IBM's Thomas Watson Research Center comprises 8 labs around the world that employ 1800 people and have been churning out computer technology innovations since 1961.

Quote from an article published by BusinessWire on year 2001 patent grants:
"IBM topped the next closest company by 75 percent, a margin of more than 1,450 patents. In fact, IBM's number surpassed the combined total of patents awarded to 12 of the largest U.S. companies in the IT industry -- Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Sun, Microsoft, Compaq, Dell, Apple, EMC, Oracle, EDS, Accenture and AOL."
