A million posts by NoAx again, and he gets it wrong every time
The Free Software world have not been thirsting after access to Microsoft XML schema.
Steve Ballmer knew when he first announced this that this was an uncrossable river they had to cross. By using XML at an explicit level in Office, they inevitably remove data file format lockin.
He prevaricated and tried to find ways to make it not so.
But here it is.

The XML file formats mean that you can translate between XML Microsoft office format, and the (soon to be ISO standard) erstwhile OpenOffice XML format that's been kicking around for some years now.

Unlike conventional Office formats, translation is made easier by the structure being marked up in the data.
An afternoons XSL writing would get a decent amount of data accross.

I personally wrote XSLs to translate MrProject (XML) files into OpenOffice Spreadsheet files for custom costing purposes in about 10 minutes.
