You haven't used a TiVo
Your post leads me to think that you haven't used a Tivo. I've had a DirecTv Tivo for a few years, and I can't imagine TV without it. Tivo is the closest thing to VOD that you'll find off the shelf today.

DirecTivo has 2 tuners which allows me to record two different shows simultaneously. I can even watch a third previously recorded show. This allows me to time-shift to the point where I don't have to remember the air time or date of any show or series that I regularly watch. I just set up a season pass for my favorite shows and let the box do the programming for me.

When I sit down on the couch, I can pick from about 100 hours of previously recorded material. My child doesn't understand why she can't watch her favorite shows when we visit other houses or while we're on vacation since she's never known TV without Tivo.

For sports, I can replay anything as much as I want, even in slow motion or frame by frame. I don't have to miss anything if I want to get another cold one, and I can fast forward through commercials. It's better to start watching a game from 20 to 40 minutes after the start so that there's a buffer to skip the boring commercials. I'll watch the last play at the same time everyone else does, but I'll have been able to do it at my pace.

The cost of the service is very reasonable when bundled with DirecTv. Standard Definition boxes are cheap to free with a new subscription. High Definition Tivo is real today with two tuners. I'll probably have one under the Xmas tree if they are available in the stores.
