MS Reliability is a bigger issue here
It's expected that you have to reboot a desktop occasionally when it hangs. How many people will find the typical MS reliability and virus possibility an acceptable risk when you might be recording the Super Bowl? Consumers expect video electronics to just plain work - every time, no excuses. The waffling over the UltimateTV bug did a lot of PR damage that's hard to forget.
