Microsoft can't play in this market.
Way to many things stopping them from doing much of anything in this market.

First, broadband in the US simply can NOT deal with interactive or on demand video. Until everyone has 50 - 100 Meg per second connections in the home, interactive and on demand video is a joke. Even if the pipe was there, no server in the world could handle the load.

Second, Microsoft has their hands tied with DRM and the demands of RIAA and the MPAA. Yes there really is a reason files stored on a DVR are useless for anything but playback on that box.

And finally and maybe most importantly, the vast majority of people are not willing to be burdened with yet another monthly fee just to watch TV.
