SysV, not BSD... but just vaguely
System V itself is pretty much frozen. In the meantime, serious UNIX vendors such as Sun have kept improving on it. The difference between SunOS 5.x and System V is probably pretty substantial now. But in any case, it means that Sun is continuing from the System V base.

SunOS 4.x is derived from UNIX BSD, which in turn was a modification of AT&T UNIX 32V... meaning it had licensed AT&T code in it as well. In fact, the merging of AT&T and Berkeley UNIX was one of the key goals of System V. At the time, Sun was the leading BSD vendor. (Heck, they were the leading UNIX vendor.)

Did AT&T ask Sun to be involved, or was Sun in a corner due to bad order management (1989) and needed an AT&T bail-out... that is unclear. What is clear is that substantial parts of System V, including the demand paging system, were written by Sun based on their BSD experience.

There are lots of Sun copyrights on the System V code base. Several other companies (including Microsoft) have copyrights in there as well, but perhaps none have influenced it so much as AT&T and Sun.

In terms of lineage and contribution to System V, one could possibly argue that Sun has more claim than SCO. happy
