Here's a why
..Web based apps, centralized computing, software as a service, whatever, have been around in one guise or another for a very long time and the fact of the matter is people are NOT going for it....

Speaking from a corporate enterprise application developer, they are going for it.
Every Intranet application has this architecture already.
With the outsourcing trend, why not use a third party app for payroll or some other business process functionality?
Especially makes sense for the small business.
Your tax return software, if not alreay online, will have a mechanism to get updates or do your state taxes online.
The software industry is still evolving. The services offered are always going to be ahead of the demand.
It is a great business model for corporate applications but the home users probably won't be too interested.
