..Linux is gaining ground so quickly because it addresses the shortcommings of client/server in a non-proprietary way....

How's it doing that then?
Shortcomings in the Internet based model being the statelessness of the application and the interfacing to the client, usually a browser, which is a bugger compared to a desktop client.
