Who is Corel competing with?
The story noted that 70% of pc's come pre-loaded with Microsoft Office. I'm surprised it's that high; the OEM discount must be substantial to make the additional cost small enough.

From the article:
For the remaining 30 percent, Microsoft, Corel and an increasing number of other challengers are slugging it out. Among them are Beijing-based Evermore Software; Gobe Software in Beaverton, Ore.; Sun Microsystems; and the developers of OpenOffice, an open-source program.

Corel had to drop the price to around $50.
This tells me that this slice of the market cares most about cheap. If OpenOffice and its Sun dependent were not around, maybe they'd be able to charge more in the non-Office market.
Sounds to me like they're another victim of open source.
