In the article.
To quote:

EICTA argued that patents would protect the investments made by European companies in research and development, protect jobs and encourage the sharing of information among companies.
"Europe is a prominent player in software-enabled inventions in many areas, such as health care, telecommunications, mobile phones, cars, aviation and consumer electronics. Europe needs patents to maintain and strengthen its leadership," wrote EICTA.

Yes, this is an industry group, and opponents disagree.
However, the companies in this organization believe they would benefit from software patents, obviously, or they wouldn't go to the trouble of lobbying for them.
And their opponents must also see patents as significant, or they wouldn't be arguing the contrary position so intensely.
