If the Senators ask nicely, P2P will be stupid
A recent court decision held that P2P software providers are not legally responsible for the swapping of materials protected by copyright because the software providers have no way of finding out what's going on.
So, of course, if they add filters and otherwise try to control what people are doing, the software providers open themselves up to liability.
They're definitely dumb enough to be doing this.

Of course, the Senators should be sending a letter to the RIAA and MPAA members telling them to get going and compete with file swapping. It's now clear that the companies can and would win.
But, also of course, the entertainment content providers refuse to use their best distribution channel. And if another company, like Apple, shows them how, they'll do their best to cripple the effort. As Steve Jobs said, Apple can't make any money of the music because the record companies insist on making as much money on a download as they do on a CD, $0.35 or $0.40 per song, if I remember correctly.

I guess stupidity is a desirable business strategy to these Senators. That's why they're urging it on the P2P software providers.
