For some people, yes, for others, no
"It certainly makes a lot more sense than buying software."

For some people, yes, for others, no. Any subscription service has weaknesses:

-It is a constant drain on the budget as opposed to a one-time or occasional cost.

-Eventually, the cost of maintaining a subscription becomes larger than a one-time cost in the long run.

Let's say a piece of software costs $4/month for a subscription, but $50 to buy. In only a year, the cost of the subscription will be as much as the software itself, so if the person/business wants to use the software for over a year, it will be cheaper to buy the software rather than subscribing to it.

It makes sense for some, but it doesn't for others. IMHO, the standard model is not going away. The subscription model may supplement, but not replace, the current model.
