Solaris is pretty much the same as Linux in engineering terms
The one thing I'll say is that I have absolutely massive respect for the awesome Minix, and in retrospect, Linux started life as an inferior nephew.
How was it that Linux surpassed Minix? I've more or less eliminated everything but the licence.
So people keep using Linux because of the licence (GPL).

Apart from that, in the POSIX world, I have great respect for QNX, all the BSDs, Hurd is actually a head-hurting future-leap, which actually runs Xwindows, and applications.
But in addition to this, I have great respect for Solaris (BSD child I think), and probably AT&Ts Unix (can't say the S*O word) in engineering terms is a solid product.
I'm happy with a command line on any of the above.
It does seem that the GPL movement is very powerful though (which might determine ultimate success), at the same time, the kernel is only a tiny bit of the overall code. (KDE etc etc runs on Solaris).
