One word: Applications
When will the UNIX world understand that UNIX will never be the desktop of choice do the absolute limited UNIX-based applications that a non-techie could install and operate.

As one who helped (in a small way) with the UCB Version of UNIX in the early 80's at UCB (3.6-3.7), UNIX was, is and always will be an excellent server OS, development OS and research OS, but it will NEVER be an excellent desktop OS since application developers can't make a living developing UNIX desktop applications.

When an OS becomes irrevalent in the future, then it will not matter what or if a user choices an OS. Note: Apple is making it on things other than their computer systems (iPOD, etc). The paradigm will have to shift to UCC (user-centered computing) from DCC (desktop-centered computing, the current computing paradigm) before the OS will become obsolent. It will happen, and someone will do to Microsoft what Microsoft did to IBM, but that time is not now.

This argument about how bad Windows is, and how good UNIX is, is becoming tedious and the marketplace not techies will and has decided. Let's get on with wireless and increased ubiquity in network access and less about which OS runs the user device. wink
