Believing Gartner is like believing technolgy sector financial analysts
Gartner is just tooting it horn - they don't have a clue - they just want to create controversy and confusion for their own benefit. (duh..., Gartner has no ties to the benchmarking business do they?)
Check the bio on the Gartner analyst - he hasn't been around that long and all he does is bash outsourcing - and his background is not even in IT!! - the guy was a Lit. major (in about 5 languages). How can an analyst say outsourcing is an "immature giant" when it has been around for over 20+ years with some very successful companies providing services to numerous Fortune 100/500 companies.

True, many outsourcing projects do fail from improper expectations from the client, but it is typically the clients trying to squeeze way more out of the service providers (than they currently have) or demanding all kinds of new capabilities for little or no additional dollars. Most potential outsourcing clients have no clue how much their IT infrasturctures really cost (they are totally unaware of all the hidden costs and values) but they sure want everything for rock bottom prices from the outsourcing vendor. Do you think vendors really want to fail? - they would not be in business for very long if that many projects failed due to their own incompetence - word gets around fast in this business. I am not saying that oursourcers are perfect (or saints) or are good for all situations - but you get what you pay for (not all outscourcing solutions can save companies money). Mutual understanding and disclosure, good governance and genuine cooperation and/or partnerships are keys.

Enough ranting - caught me on a bad day.
