- "but this time MS is on the losing end" - - - Not so sure about that...

I'm not surte that "this time MS is on the losing end". They have the power to tilt the playing field by making their search the default - and forcing people to change that to use another search.
Most users (who are not computer savy) will not bother - they're afraid they may 'break' things.
"Just being there" is incredible market power in this field - and MS has the power to force ONLY their search to "just be there".
