...How can the best search win when . . .
1) MS welds its search into the OS
2) Users will need to go out of their way to deselect MS search and use another...

If you conclude that consumers are incapable of choice then it looks pretty bleak.
Hasn't stopped the Firefox project however.
Maybe you should tell em the bad news.

I like the idea of them going head to head as it would be in my best interest.
Your mileage may vary but don't give up.
