China and .NET
This is a logical strategic move for Microsoft, and one can expect similar moves into other global markets.

One of the advantages of Microsoft's centralized organizational model is that they are able to develop policy and strategy. The Linux model for distribution of the core OS is obviously different, and so the details of its penetration into the world market will be different as a consequence. Nevertheless, it, too, will likely see similar shepharding by companies such as RedHat and Novell that are able to mount a rational marketing strategy based on business principles. While the Open Software model may be good for maximizing the level and quality of communication, it doesn't look particularly good for creating and developing a large scale or sustainable business. The Chinese are smart to hedge their bets by signing agreements with everyone under the sun. What will be significant is to see how these agreements are carried out in practice. I'm going to be watching the issue of IP rights - I don't see the Chinese as being particularly interested in respecting assertions of ownership that were essentially made in a vacuum in the U.S. without their input or assent. Nor should they. In the global market U.S. patent law doesn't hold sway, nor should it.
