Great for Company, Bad For Consumer
Same old, same old. Yes, there are some very expensive solutions out there, and some consumers might benefit some with leasing software, or paying a monthly service fee.

However, for most software this isn't required. If the data and documents are hosted on the vendor's software site, you lose control. And if you have to pay licenses for locally installed software, that's just trying to turn it into a cash cow -- so that vendors can get perpetual $$$ without having to work any harder.

And goodness help you if you have to start paying monthy fees for software that locks you into a particular vendor. Then, that vendor can pretty much charge whatever they want.

I believe that in most cases, such software should be avoided.
